Background of the Study
Maternal anemia is a significant health concern in developing countries, affecting both maternal and fetal outcomes. Anemia during pregnancy is commonly caused by iron deficiency, poor nutrition, infections, and underlying health conditions (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024). It has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and maternal mortality (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024).
In Nasarawa State, maternal anemia prevalence remains high, despite antenatal care interventions aimed at improving maternal health (Usman & Bello, 2024). Socioeconomic factors, dietary deficiencies, and inadequate healthcare services contribute to poor pregnancy outcomes among anemic mothers. However, there is limited research on statistical trends that connect maternal anemia with pregnancy complications in Nasarawa State (Olaniyan et al., 2023).
This study aims to investigate statistical trends in maternal anemia and its impact on pregnancy outcomes, providing valuable data for improving maternal healthcare strategies.
Statement of the Problem
Maternal anemia is a leading cause of maternal and neonatal health complications in Nigeria. Despite healthcare interventions, many pregnant women in Nasarawa State continue to experience anemia, leading to adverse birth outcomes (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024). However, there is a lack of statistical evidence to quantify the relationship between anemia and pregnancy outcomes (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024).
Without a comprehensive statistical assessment, healthcare providers may struggle to implement targeted interventions to reduce anemia-related complications. This study seeks to bridge this gap by analyzing statistical trends in maternal anemia and pregnancy outcomes in Nasarawa State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of maternal anemia in Nasarawa State.
2. To examine the impact of maternal anemia on pregnancy outcomes.
3. To analyze statistical trends in maternal anemia over the past five years.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of maternal anemia in Nasarawa State?
2. How does maternal anemia influence pregnancy outcomes?
3. What statistical trends exist in maternal anemia over the past five years?
Research Hypotheses
1. Maternal anemia prevalence has significantly increased in Nasarawa State.
2. Anemia during pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.
3. Maternal anemia is more prevalent among women in lower socioeconomic groups.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on pregnant women attending antenatal care in Nasarawa State. Limitations may include incomplete medical records and variations in anemia diagnosis criteria.
Definitions of Terms
• Maternal Anemia: A condition where a pregnant woman has lower-than-normal hemoglobin levels, affecting oxygen transport in the blood.
• Pregnancy Outcomes: Health conditions resulting from pregnancy, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth.
• Statistical Trends: Patterns and variations in data over time.
